Music GuidelinesMusic Guidelines—GYC 2010 “No Turning Back” "And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God." - Luke 9:62 The theme for GYC 2010—No Turning Back—will guide the selection of music. The music committee will strive to utilize music that will ennoble the senses and allow the Holy Spirit to transform and renew minds. This has the following implications: 1) Definition: In the medium of music, the Word of God is presented through direct quotation of God’s Word, a paraphrase which faithfully delivers the intensions of the text, lyrics which embody the spirit and theology of Seventh-day Adventist Christianity, or sound made by an instrument(s) that clearly makes allusions to sacred themes. (ref. Eze 22:26) 2) Vertical Communication: Offering music is an act of worship, and therefore, needs to be primarily directed towards our object of worship, God. This awareness must be present in the process of selecting, preparing, and presenting the music. (ref. Col 3:23; Education 168) 3) Horizontal Communication: The musician should have in mind the congregation that will receive the music. Since music should edify, the musical selections must be comprehensible to the average listener. That is, music which is personally edifying, but that which cannot edify others due to the abstruse nature of the musical idiom, will not be appropriate for use at GYC. (ref. Col 3:16; 1 Cor 14) 4) Holistic Communication: Music should engage the soul, mind, and body. Any musical style that ignores worshipping with our whole selves, and focuses on a single aspect of a person, is unbalanced, and will not be used at GYC. (ref. Mark 12:30) 5) Consecrated Communication: The music must be devoid of associations with immorality and triviality. Undignified attitudes and gestures can do as much harm as the music itself. (1 Cor 9:27; Rom 14; The Voice in Speech and Song, 423) 6) Excellent Communication: GYC strives for excellence in all areas, and music is an effective medium for representing this philosophy. Musical excellence, as well as spiritual sincerity, maturity, and appropriateness will all be considered in evaluating musical selections. (Isa 10:15; 1 Peter 2:9) Ways to Participate Special Music Due to the nature of the conference and the high volume of requests, there is a rigorous selection process. All music must be performed live without recorded accompaniment. The submission deadline is September 30, 2010 (see Application Process below). Please download and submit the application (with all supporting documents) by September 30, 2010. Only those registered for GYC 2010 will be considered in the musical selection process. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by November 11, 2010. Please note that as GYC is a volunteer organization, all musicians will be expected to provide their own travel and registration funds. Ensembles Various opportunities to worship God through musical ensembles will be available. The traditional GYC choir will be organized, as will a Men’s Chorus. No formal application is necessary for participation in these ensembles. If you are interested, e-mail Sean Nebblett at music@gycweb.org. Download Music Application PDF
