GYC looks for talented church musicians from around the world who seek to bring glory to God through the ministry of music. We seek young people who strive to draw others close to heaven through song.
The GYC Music Committee looks for music that explores and reinforces the theme for the year. We invite any attendee to apply to help with music at the conference, providing that the music is in harmony with the following guidelines:
Faithful. Whether through direct quotation, paraphrase, or principle, lyrical music must faithfully and contextually reflect the Word of God and the spirit and theology of Seventh-day Adventist Christianity.
Worshipful. Sacred music is an act of worship, and therefore, needs to be primarily directed towards our object of worship, God. This awareness must be present in the process of selecting, preparing, and presenting the music (Colossians 3:23; Education 168). Instrumental music at GYC must make clear allusions to distinctly sacred themes.
Meaningful. The musician should have in mind the congregation that will receive the music. Since music should edify, the musical selections must be comprehendible by the average listener and personally edifying for the people in the audience. That which cannot edify others due to the style, nature, or content of the musical selection, will not be appropriate for use at GYC (Colossians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 14).
Simple. Music should engage the soul, mind, and body. It should praise the Name of Jesus with sincerity and reverence. Any musical style that implements the use of strong rhythmic drive or focuses on the individual performing rather than God, is unbalanced, and will not be used at GYC (ref. Mark 12:30).
Pure. The music and musician must have depth and pervasive purity. Undignified attitudes and gestures can do as much harm as the music itself (1 Corinthians 9:27; Romans 14; The Voice in Speech and Song, 423). Modest and simple dress should characterize the presentation with purity (1 Timothy 2:9).
Excellent. GYC strives for excellence in all areas, and music is an effective medium for representing this philosophy. Musical excellence, as well as spiritual sincerity, maturity, and appropriateness, will all be considered in evaluating musical selections. (Isaiah 10:15; 1 Peter 2:9).
